Fire at ShopRite on Staten Island prompts massive FDNY response night before Thanksgiving

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A fire at the ShopRite location in Great Kills filled the store with smoke and prompted a massive FDNY response on Wednesday afternoon — the day before Thanksgiving, one of the busiest food-shopping days of the year.

The blaze broke out in an aisle at the supermarket’s new location on Greaves Lane in Evergreen Plaza at 3:44 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the FDNY.

Multiple fire engines were on the scene with ladders stretched to the top of the supermarket, while scores of fully-equipped firefighters with hoses lined up outside the building.
