Suspect in Staten Island decapitation murder tells lawyers he’s hallucinating on Rikers Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — During a court appearance this week for Damien Hurstel, his attorneys cited concerns about his level of treatment on Rikers Island.

Hurstel — who is accused of killing and then decapitating his mother’s live-in boyfriend last year in the family’s West Brighton home — has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the defense has noted previously in court proceedings.
