Mayor Zohran Mamdani visits Staten Island mosque, joins Muslims for evening Ramadan prayers

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mayor Zohran Mamdani made his way to Staten Island on Wednesday evening to join members of the borough’s Muslim community at the Muslim American Society Staten Island Center in Dongan Hills for Taraweeh, a special nightly prayer observed during the holy month of Ramadan.

Mamdani was ushered with his staff into the back of the Burgher Avenue building when they arrived just after 7 p.m. as the evening prayer was about to begin. Taraweeh features longer recitations from the Quran and brings worshippers together each night during Ramadan for reflection, prayer and community.

Several local residents gathered outside the mosque, hoping to take a quick selfie with the mayor, but were told he was on a tight schedule…
