National ‘Slam the Scam Day’ exposes fraud threats to Staten Island residents

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Crime in the borough reached record lows last year, with the Island maintaining its status as the safest community of its size in the country. Yet scammers remain one of the highest drivers of crime in the area, having stolen millions of dollars from residents last year.

The Richmond County District Attorney’s office marked National ”Slam the Scam Day” Thursday by highlighting the prevalence of fraudulent schemes targeting Staten Islanders of all ages.

Scammers employed various tactics including artificial intelligence impersonation, jewelry swaps, romance scams, construction worker scams and unpaid toll schemes in their quests to alleviate residents of their savings…
