Traffic tickets from cops plummet in NYC — but not because our drivers have gotten better

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — If it feels like police officers on Staten Island are writing fewer traffic tickets than they used to, that’s because they are.

In fact, the NYPD is issuing fewer traffic tickets all across the five boroughs than it did a decade ago, with enforcement plummeting during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and never returning back to past levels.

While the exact cause of the declining enforcement is unknown, the rise of automated enforcement devices, like speed cameras and red light cameras, coupled with short staffing at the NYPD, could be among the contributing factors…
