STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island leaders are pushing back against Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to dramatically expand 15 mph school slow zones across New York City, questioning whether the one‑size‑fits‑all approach makes sense for a borough where residents rely heavily on cars and schools often sit empty overnight and on weekends.

Under Mamdani’s proposal, the city will roll out roughly 800 additional slow zones at schools across the five boroughs by the end of the year, setting the stage for a broader debate over safety, enforcement, and fairness.
