‘Putting profits over people’: Nurses give strike notice at this Staten Island hospital

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Some Staten Island University Hospital nurses may soon be going on strike as contract negotiations remain at an impasse over wages, benefits and staffing ratios.

The Federation of Nurses/UFT filed a 10-day strike notification with Northwell Health’s Staten Island University Hospital-South campus in Prince’s Bay on Thursday, March 19, in compliance with federal labor law. The union’s current contract at the hospital expires the morning of Wednesday, April 1.

“Hospital management is putting profits over people. Management’s short-sighted games mean more nurses will leave, and in the long run, patients and the community will suffer,” said Anne Goldman, head of the Federation of Nurses/UFT, which represents roughly 300 nurses at Staten Island University Hospital-South and 16,000 nurses across New York State…
