New Staten Island school site gets approval despite community concerns

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Councilmember Frank Morano announced his support for a new 754-seat primary/intermediate school in his district last week, prompting the City Council to approve the NYC School Construction Authority’s site selection of a 96,000-square-foot parcel at the corner of Abingdon and East Reading avenues in Great Kills.

“In today’s City of Yes environment, vacant land like this is not going to remain vacant,” Morano said during a City Council hearing on March 18, explaining his support for the project. “If this site isn’t used for a school, it’s going to be used for something else.”

Bounded by East Perkiomen Avenue to the north, East Reading Avenue to the south, Abingdon Avenue to the east and Armstrong Avenue to the west, the proposed site, currently an empty grassy lot surrounded by residential homes, consists of 18 privately owned vacant lots…
