Staten Island residents protest proposed homeless shelter: ‘Recipe for disaster’

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island residents and elected officials are not backing down in the fight against a proposed homeless shelter on the South Shore

Dozens of people gathered for a protest of the facility in Richmond Valley on Saturday afternoon, voicing concerns about the plan and urging city officials to reconsider the proposal.

The new facility, expected to open in mid‑2027, will serve men who are experiencing homelessness while either employed or seeking employment. Operated by Community Housing Innovations, the shelter is part of the city’s equitable siting strategy to ensure all neighborhoods share responsibility for providing safety‑net services for New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.

The protest, which took place just steps away from the possible location for the proposed 160-bed men’s homeless shelter on Arthur Kill Road near Richmond Valley Road, focused on lack of resources, safety concerns and inconsistent or inaccurate communication from city officials regarding the construction.

Protesters, who began gathering at 10:45 a.m., waved American flags and held signs with phrases such as “No Homeless Shelter on Arthur Kill Road,” or “No Services, No Support, No Sidewalks, No Shelter.”…
