STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Students from 29 Staten Island schools gathered at the Michael J. Petrides Campus on May 16 for the annual Soap Box Derby, a race that features homemade, gravity-powered cars.
In the derby, students race the cars they’ve built down a track in two-car heats, each pair running twice and switching lanes. The driver with the lower average time advances to the next round.
