County’s compost site grows, keeping more food scraps out of the dump

Soon, mounds of deep-brown, decomposing waste will fill the empty, 3-acre space at Republic Services’ San Joaquin County organics site.

Previously, the facility was able to compost 95,000 tons of organic waste across a 1-acre plot, where food scraps, yard trimmings and food-soiled paper were processed each year.

Now, the compost site — nearly triple its original footprint — will be able to process up to 147,000 tons annually. That increase means the site can handle the organic waste of more than 1,000 homes and businesses, including local farmers, across Stockton and San Joaquin County…
