Crash kills woman near community of Thornton; CHP says alcohol was a factor

(FOX40.COM) — A single-vehicle crash on Sunday near the community of Thornton in southern Sacramento County ended with the death of a passenger and injuries to three other people in the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said the crash happened around 1:11 a.m. near the intersection of New Hope Road and West New Hope Road, about 25 miles south of Sacramento and close to Interstate 5.

The CHP said that the vehicle appeared to have been traveling eastbound on New Hope Road between 50 and 55 miles per hour when it did not complete a turn and veered off the roadway, crashing into a tree.

One of the rear passengers who was not wearing a seatbelt, a 48-year-old woman, sustained fatal injuries, the CHP said.

The driver sustained major injuries and the other two passengers sustained minor injuries. All were taken to UC Davis Medical Center.

The CHP said alcohol impairment was a contributing factor to the crash and the driver was arrested.
