Antioch mayor speaks out on racist social post probe

ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) — The Antioch Police Department is investigating a racist post made on social media that is believed to be targeting Black city council members.

Antioch Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe said he is disappointed but not shocked. The post saying “bring back hangings in town square” to “fix Antioch right up” is now under police investigation.

“Someone said we need to bring ‘hangings back to the Town Square.’ At what point again when they’re not satisfied with their reaction on social media, what else are they willing to do? And I think these bloggers have a lot to answer to,” said Mayor Hernandez-Thorpe.

The mayor said comments like this have been his experience since stepping into the leadership role. “I have a 15-year-old daughter. I’m always concerned about her safety, and my role as mayor, particularly knowing there are these whack jobs running around our community.”

More than a dozen Antioch police officers have been linked to a federal investigation, accused of sending a series of racist text messages. Antioch police told KRON4 News they are looking into the social media post and the investigation should be wrapped up in a few weeks.
