Powerful Storm System Brings Risk of “Sneaker” Waves Across Parts of California & Oregon

Next Trio of Powerful West Coast Storms Arriving Today Through Monday

12/19/24 4:03pm EST

Good afternoon everyone. Our pattern continues to be very active for the West Coast as the next wave of 3 systems line up to impact the region today through Monday.

Steady heavy rain and strong winds are about to make it to the Oregon and Washington coast, while northern California is dealing with more of a light and scattered variety of rain. However, strong winds nearing the gale force realm will help create some very large waves and beach hazards in regards.

Here on the East Coast, we call these “rogue” waves when a particular wave is 2-3 times the average height. On the West Coast, they call them “sneaker” waves for the same reason and they sneak up on unsuspecting beach-goers. Regardless of the terminology, we expect this hazard to continue this evening and possibly again with the next set of systems coming in.

Look for heavy rain, strong winds, and heavy snow in the higher elevations as these storms come ashore. In the long range outlook, we really don’t see any lull in the action until around possibly the first week of the new year.
