Identity of California woman who won record-setting $1.2 billion lottery jackpot released

A Cottonwood resident became a temporary billionaire after winning the $1.2 billion Mega Millions jackpot, California Lottery officials announced Monday. Rosemary Casarotti purchased the lucky ticket at the Sunshine Food and Gas Circle K in Cottonwood, located nearly 20 miles south of Redding.

Casarotti was the only person nationwide to match all six numbers in the December 27 Mega Millions drawing. She declined to participate in the Monday press conference, expressing her desire to “remain as private as possible.”

California Lottery Director Harjinder Shergill Chima congratulated Casarotti, saying her win helps support public education funding throughout the state.
