Southwest Airlines Announces Major Fare Changes, Including New Basic Economy Fares

Southwest Airlines is overhauling its fare structure starting May 28, 2025, with significant changes impacting travelers nationwide. The airline will introduce a new “Basic Fares” category, replacing its current lowest-tier “Wanna Get Away” pricing, according to The Points Guy.

Under the new structure, Basic Fares will be nonrefundable and non-changeable, except under Southwest’s 24-hour cancellation policy. Passengers who cancel at least 10 minutes before departure may receive non-transferable flight credits that expire after six months.

Additionally, Basic Fares will not permit same-day changes or standby options. Rapid Rewards members will only earn two points per dollar spent on these fares, down from the previous six.
