Massive sinkhole in Modesto shuts down roadway

(FOX40.COM) — The city of Modesto urged drivers to be on high alert after a road caved in and formed a massive sinkhole in the downtown area.

An 8-foot-wide and several-foot-deep sinkhole was discovered at the intersection of H Street and 16th Street on Monday morning. According to city officials, it was most likely caused by a collapsed storm line but is still under investigation.

“Any time there’s a hole like that, it takes a lot of water to move the dirt and create the hole, so, that’s probably what happened,” said the Modesto Wastewater Collections Systems Superintendent Robert Englent.

He added that it’s not uncommon to see sinkholes after a period of rain.
