New York literature professor at Bard died after swimming in Northern California river

A New York professor died after swimming in a Northern California river last week, according to local authorities and Bard College, where the woman taught.

Rebecca Cole Heinowitz, 50, was reported missing last week after she was seen struggling while swimming in the Yuba River, just upstream from South Yuba Bridge in Nevada City, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said. Officials were still searching for Heinowitz’s body, the agency’s spokesperson Ashley Quadros said.
