Lodi’s Sunset Theater faces demolition as residents push to save memories

STOCKTON, Calif. — A historic theater in Lodi may be torn down, but some residents are fighting to preserve it.

Behind grey walls near the corner of Lodi Avenue and Sunset Drive, the Sunset Theater sits gutted, a shell of the once-bustling movie house that closed in 1998. For many locals, it’s not just another vacant building.

“I remember going there, piling in the back of my grandpa’s truck for the premiere of Michael Keaton’s Batman,” said Ralph Clark of Historical Guild 209. “I remember seeing Indiana Jones with my friend Todd Schlinker and watching that boulder roll down and just being in awe.”…
