Delta relocates Cunningham plaque to archives, clarifying Huerta Plaza naming

Delta College has permanently moved a plaque commemorating the former Cunningham Building to the archive, five years after it was quietly reinstalled in the area now known as Dolores Huerta Plaza.

Facilities crews took down the plaque and its brick pedestal on Sept. 29 after the college’s Executive Leadership Team authorized the removal at the end of August, according to Facilities Director Stacy Pinola. The work was done in-house at no cost, and the plaque will be moved to the college archive.

“The plaque was a simple way to respect our past at Delta College,” Pinola said in an email statement. “Yet there was confusion of the plaque interfering with the naming of the plaza after Dolores Huerta. All documents on campus have the plaza listed as Dolores Huerta Plaza.”…
