Hochul touts progress on transforming Syracuse Developmental Center into housing hub

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul announced progress on the $130 million transformation of the old Syracuse Developmental Center on Tuesday.

The demolition of the old building is now complete. Governor Hochul said the former site of the 600,000 square-foot center located at 800-2 S. Wilbur Ave. will be turned into more than 260 new, affordable apartments during the first phase of construction.

The project includes three phases with the hope of transforming the center into more than 500 units of “affordable and market-rate” apartments and townhomes. Hochul said 7.5 acres of green space, an advanced manufacturing facility with office space, and 3,600 square feet of retail commercial space are also planned…
