Central NY is about to get soaked as a cool system moves through Monday

Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible across Central New York on Sunday afternoon, but the main weather story will be steady rain moving into the region late Sunday night and continuing through much of Monday.

A developing low pressure system tracking across the Ohio Valley will bring widespread rain to the region starting after midnight Sunday and lasting through Monday evening. The National Weather Service expects rainfall amounts around one inch across most of Central New York, with the Finger Lakes potentially seeing slightly higher totals.

The rain will begin in southwestern portions of the state shortly after midnight and spread northeast through the early morning hours on Monday. Forecasters note some uncertainty remains about the exact track of the system, which could shift the heaviest rainfall slightly north or south of current projections. Areas closer to Lake Ontario may see lower amounts around a half inch, while locations farther south could receive more than an inch.

Sunday will feature seasonal temperatures in the mid 70s with clouds and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms developing between late morning and early afternoon. Any storms that form could produce gusty winds, though severe weather is not expected. Precipitation chances decrease after 5 p.m. Sunday as dry air works into the region…
