Central New York childcare shortage forces parents onto several waitlists

MINOA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — As providers continue to see high demand and limited openings, finding child care in the region has become a search that starts months before it’s actually needed.

Parents are putting their names on multiple waitlists during pregnancy in hopes of securing a spot by the time they return to work. Tracy Bourdon, director of Tender Hearts Family Child Care in Minoa, noticed that a large number of centers have closed down since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A lot of family childcare providers have closed down as well. The funding wasn’t there to keep them sustainable and to stay open,” she explained…
