Almost 20 years after vandals defaced her car, Erin Davies’ 2002 Volkswagen Beetle — known as the “Fagbug” — will go on display at an Upstate New York museum.
Beginning July 1 and running through 2029, the colorful Beetle will be featured in the New York State Museum’s new “Revolutionary New York” exhibit in Albany, which explores events and movements that shaped the state and the nation.
The exhibit marks the latest chapter in the car’s unlikely journey. In 2007, Davies’ car, which displayed a rainbow sticker, was spray-painted with the words “fag” and “u r gay” while it was parked near her apartment in Albany.
Davies, a Syracuse native, left the graffiti untouched and embarked on a 58-day road trip across the United States and Canada, documenting people’s reactions to the vandalism and other anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes she encountered along the way…
