Syracuse city officials call for more bus-riding and electric vehicles in ‘climate action plan’

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens is rolling out a plan to shift away from a car-centric city.

City officials and planning consultants drafted a “Climate Action Plan” to guide the Owens administration’s policies on environmental sustainability. Owens’ office published the final document on Tuesday. The plan outlines goals to switch city-owned vehicles from fossil fuel-run to electric, and to encourage people to travel by bus, bike, and foot instead of resorting to cars.

Part of the plan is essentially an information campaign about a new bus system within the city. Designers for the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, or Centro for short, are reworking some of the quasi-private state-affiliated bus company’s bus lines in Syracuse. The new map would cut down on the number of routes and attempt to reduce wait times…
