Syracuse’s quest for a new municipal dog shelter finally lands on a site

Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse officials have a new site in mind just beyond its borders to locate a much-discussed city dog shelter.

The city is in negotiations to purchase a warehouse/office building on Burnet Avenue in the village of East Syracuse across from the Lotte Corp. pharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

After reversing course on a $2.5 million plan proposed in 2025 to build a shelter in the Inner Harbor neighborhood, the city has been exploring sites for a facility to help address the city’s growing stray dog problem…
