Community and police step out for first-ever Suicide Prevention Awareness 5k Run/Walk

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and on Saturday, the Syracuse Police Department and the Syracuse Run Club partnered to host their first ever Suicide Prevention Awareness 5k Run/Walk.

The event was held at the Onondaga Creekwalk Saturday morning. It was organized by Lieutenant Christina Lewis with the Syracuse Police Department, who also serves as a member on the Syracuse Run Club. She said events like this highlight the support and services that the Syracuse Police Department offers while being able to interact and build positive connections with the community that they serve.

“Police officers respond to these types of calls all the time and so, to be able to come together not in that capacity–and to come together on a Saturday morning and say ‘hey we’re here to support you. This is what we do when we’re out in the field but we also can mingle with you. Anytime you need us, we’re here,'” said Lt. Lewis. “We just want to spread the cause.”…
