Drivers are learning there is a perfect time to salt your driveway – and it must take correct order with shoveling

DRIVERS have been applying salt to their driveway to help get rid of pesky road ice – but science experts say they’ve been putting the de-icing solution down in the incorrect order.

Experts said drivers must check the temperature and weather forecast to know the proper time to salt driveways.

Ice works to lower the freezing point of accumulated snow and ice.

So, experts say drivers should apply ice to their driveways before a winter weather event.

“The best times are before the precipitation arrives,” Dave Longley, a meteorologist in snow-filled Syracuse, New York, said to Nexstar affiliate WGN9.

“It is [also] good to put some down after you finish shoveling or plowing.”

The second level of salt will protect driveways from future blasts of freezing precipitation.

However, drivers should avoid applying too much salt on their driveway.
