Tioga Central wins third straight NYSPHSAA Wrestling Dual Meet Championships title in DII

Tioga Central added to its status as title central Saturday by claiming the Division II title for the third year in a row at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Dual Meet Championships at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.

The Tigers punctuated a commanding day with a 56-12 victory over Long Island’s John Glenn of Section 11 in the final after rolling to a 51-24 semifinal win against Section 5’s Palmyra-Macedon.

Tioga won two meets in pool competition to advance to the semifinals: 51-15 over Section 2 champion Cobleskill-Richmondville and 78-0 against Island Trees of Section 8.

A significant portion of the Tioga wrestlers helped the school’s football team claim a third consecutive Class D state title last month in similarly dominant fashion.

Tioga, coached by Kris Harrington, has topped the team standings in Division II at the last four NYSPHSAA individual wrestling championships. This year’s event will be held Feb. 23 and 24 at MVP Arena in Albany. Last weekend Tioga rolled to the team title at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament.
