Auburn Reportedly Hires Former Big Ten Head Coach As Defensive Coordinator

Auburn is expected to name DJ Durkin as the next defensive coordinator for the Tigers, according to ESPN’s Chris Low . Durkin spent the previous two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Texas A&M.

Durkin has a long history as a defensive coordinator in the SEC. Before his stint at Texas A&M, Durkin served as the co-defensive coordinator at Ole Miss for two seasons.

He also was an assistant at Florida from 2010-14 and was promoted to defensive coordinator ahead of the 2013 season. He was named the interim head coach after Will Muschamp stepped down and led the Gators to a win over East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl. He was also named the 2012 Rivals Recruiter of the Year.

Durkin was named the head coach at Maryland in 2016 and was 10-15 over two seasons with the Terrapins. He was placed on administrative leave ahead of the 2018 season after the death of Jordan McNair. After his leave, Durkin held a team meeting that ended with players walking out, and was fired later that week.
