Hiring local heavy construction workers for I-81 Viaduct project

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The New York State Department of Transportation is looking to hire and train heavy construction workers for the Interstate 81 Viaduct project.

The State Department of Labor and the NYSDOT held a heavy construction training fair on Wednesday at the CNY Works Career Center in Syracuse, to help people find training and workforce development programs to be hire-ready.

The Central New York community is making history together through Syracuse’s I-81 Viaduct Project. Come this Spring, local neighbors experienced or not in heavy construction are needed to help get the job done.

For the past two years, the state DOT and state DOL have been working hard to ensure opportunities are available for local neighbors to work on the project. It’s a commitment they’re making to the CNY community, by creating a local hire initiative.

“Contractors have to have 15 percent of their workforce be local hires, and so today we have one of our contractors here, who are ready to hire folks,” said TeNesha Murphy, -81 Viaduct Project Community Liaison & Public Information Officer for New York State Department of Transportation.
