Lourdes transitions from religious to secular

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – With Lourdes transitioning from a religious-affiliated hospital to a secular facility, there will be some additional services provided and some changes to the interior design.

As a Catholic hospital, Lourdes did not offer birth control procedures such as vasectomies and tubal ligations on site.

Guthrie Lourdes Hospital will begin offering those services.

Also, much, but not all, of the Christian artwork and symbolism is being removed from the facility.

Guthrie Lourdes Hospital President Kathy Connerton says the hospital will continue to have a chapel and the grotto featuring the Virgin Mary in front of the hospital will remain.

She says Lourdes worked with the Syracuse Diocese to find homes in local parishes and Catholic schools for all of the artwork that was removed.
