SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Police Department is celebrating Black History Month by recognizing Black officers who pioneered the way for others to join the department. Detective Willie B. Gilbert became the first African American Syracuse Police Officer in 1951. He served for 36 years, achieving the rank of Detective in 1977.
