Oneida County Sheriffs involved in Vienna standoff

VIENNA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Oneida County Sheriffs were involved in a standoff in the Town of Vienna that shut down Powell Road for several hours, according to sheriffs.

Officers were called to the Powell Road residence at approximately 10:19 pm on Tuesday, August 20 for a reported domestic incident. It was reported to the sheriffs that a male — whose name was not released — had a knife in his possession.

It was determined that the male was the only person in the residence. Initial attempts to have the male leave the residence were unsuccessful. This necessitated the shutdown of Powell Road between Deeley Road and Kimball Road for several hours.

Members of the Oneida County Sheriffs’ Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene to help bring the male out. Sheriffs say that after approximately an hour of negotiation, they successfully convinced the male to exit the residence. He was taken into custody under New York State Mental Health Law without further incident.

The male was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
