Hardy was accused of shooting and killing Officer Ritter on the Fourth of July. Ritter was 27 years old at the time of the shooting. Ritter was a native of the Rochester area, graduating from McQuaid Jesuit High School in 2015 and Syracuse University in 2019. He served in the National Guard before joining the Cleveland Division of Police in 2020.

Furthermore, Hardy was accused of killing his own grandmother the week before Ritter’s death. Court documents say he could be restored to competency with a course of treatment.
