In 1972, a young girl approached the Syracuse Chargers’ girls’ cross country at a long-forgotten meet at Brockport, N.Y. She was hardly impressed by what she saw. The rag-tag group of Syracuse runners, ages 14-17, were dressed in mismatched track suits, whose rips and tears had been repaired by their parents. Their gear had no uniform style or colors. They did not wear the same fancy sneakers their competitors wore.
