Apple fritters are a favorite at Central Square Apple Fest

CENTRAL SQUARE N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — If you follow your nose at Apple Fest, you’ll probably find yourself at the Lion’s Club apple fritter stand… a tradition that’s been feeding the community for over 30 years.

From local schools, parks, and community programs, every dollar these golden fritters make goes back to the community that shapes them. A tradition that’s been woven into Apple Fest.

“It gives us a lot of pleasure to be able to help them out a little bit. I mean even a $1,000-dollar scholarship doesn’t go far but it helps them buy books it helps them pay for some of their extras in college,” said Andrew Smolnick, a board member of Central Square’s Lion Club.

Over the past year, the club has doubled its scholarships, always trying to support a cause big or small.

Behind the counter, is the dedicated team of volunteers who fry up over 20,000 apple fitters… and some of these folks could be the next scholarship recipient.

“The school has a lot to do with getting the kids together for scholarship hours or their core hour that they need to graduate high school. A lot of the kids choose to help us every year to get those core hours for the school,” said Board Member, Ben Johnston.
