‘It’s just dangerous’: Syracuse Police Chief highlights importance of disposing narcotics safely

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — For the first time since 2018, opioid-related overdose deaths are down nationwide. The White House credits that to the use of Narcan. This Saturday law enforcement agencies around the country will be collecting prescription drugs to be disposed of safely.

Wegmans to hold prescription medication drop-off event

Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile says the DEA Drug Take Back is a major factor in preventing opioid-related deaths in the city.

“It’s just one more way we can keep prescription drugs, narcotics out of the hands of children that might be in the house,” Cecile said. “If your house is unfortunately burglarized those drugs may end up on the street.”

Many of the drugs that get dropped off are not being used anymore or are expired, sitting in a cabinet.
