Your Stories Q&A: Former DeWitt Friendly’s demolished to make way for popular burger chain

TOWN OF DEWITT, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer!

A popular question to the Your Stories Team: What’s next for the former Friendly’s in DeWitt?

We have a tasty update! The former Friendly’s restaurant, which is located at the intersection of Erie Blvd. E. and Bridge Street in the Town of DeWitt has been torn down. Crews started demolition between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

The spot is going to become a Shake Shack. The popular Burger Chain was approved by the Town of DeWitt last year.

In 2023, Rachel’s Mediterranean Grill , based out of Buffalo, had been approved for this location. But that project never came to fruition.

This will be the first stand-alone Shake Shack location in Central New York.

You may have tried the chain while making a stop on the Thruway. Some of the new service centers on I-90 have Shake Shack’s.

The New York City-based chain is known for its signature burgers, fries and shakes.

Shake Shack wouldn’t provide a construction timeline. It would only say it will be open at the DeWitt location sometime this year.
