ALBANY — Gov. Kathy Hochul said she’s poised to call in the National Guard as labor strikes at New York prisons continued expanding to more than two dozen facilities Tuesday, creating an increasingly dire situation that has resulted in officers who are showing up for work being forced to remain in the facilities.
“I have directed my administration to meet with union leadership to resolve this situation and have also ordered the National Guard be mobilized to secure our correctional facilities in the event it is not resolved by (Wednesday),” Hochul said in a statement.
By the time Hochul issued her statement, her office had already met with representatives of the labor union that represents correction officers as well as leaders of the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
