Syracuse mailman to receive national humanitarian award

When Syracuse mail carrier Matthew Ross Sr. was delivering to his routes last year, he noticed that a few middle school report cards were being sent to hotels. Ross grew concerned about child poverty in the Syracuse area and knew he had to do something.

After connecting with counselors at a local middle school, Ross raised money from the community to purchase gifts like toys, winter clothes and craft supplies for three Syracuse middle-schoolers.

This dedication to the Syracuse community earned Ross the 2025 National Association of Letter Carriers’ Humanitarian of the Year award. Ross will be honored at the NALC’s National Heroes of the Year event Thursday in Washington, DC. The awards ceremony recognizes mail carriers from across the country who have gone above and beyond to be good community members…
