Man who stabbed deputy snuck knife into jail in body cavity, sheriff says

Syracuse, N.Y. — Onondaga County’s sheriff has changed how people booked into the Justice Center are searched after an investigation revealed a man who stabbed a deputy brought the knife into jail concealed in his body cavity, the sheriff said Thursday.

Jeffrey Tillman, 37, of Syracuse, attacked two deputies in the common area of the jail with a 5-inch knife just after 10 a.m. Jan. 10, authorities said. Tillman was charged with attempted murder for stabbing Deputy Erik Francis five times, authorities have said.

When Tillman entered the jail three months earlier for an assault charge, he had been scanned and strip-searched, Sheriff Toby Shelley said at a news conference Thursday…
