Enhanced driver license holders don’t need to upgrade to REAL ID

WAMPSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Drivers in New York State who already have an “enhanced” version of the driver’s license do not need to upgrade to REAL ID. The Madison County Clerk is working to clarify for the community.

The “enhanced driver license” offered by five states, including New York, requires the same proof upon application and meets the same criteria as the REAL ID to meet upgraded federal standards.

“We’ve had numerous customers come in, with an enhanced license and they were told they needed to downgrade,” said Madison County Clerk Michael Keville.” Like, ‘I was told I need to get a REAL ID.’ You don’t need a REAL ID. You’re good.”

Keville’s heard reports from customers that TSA agents are giving them inaccurate information, including at the Syracuse airport and other airports in New York State…
