Tensions boil over handling of Maria Regina property between Syracuse Mayor, councilors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh’s Office said he stopped communicating with Mark Congel, the property owner of the Maria Regina campus, in 2022 after he became “increasingly unresponsive.”

Now, the City of Syracuse Division of Code Enforcement has ordered the demolition of the St. Anthony’s Convent on the campus after it was heavily damaged in a massive fire that tore through it on March 21.
