Poll: New York majority against Hochul leadership, reelection

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — New York residents show low confidence in Governor Kathy Hochul, according to a Marist Poll conducted from April 3 to April 9. Only 39% of surveyed New Yorkers approved of her job performance, while 46% disapproved and 16% couldn’t decide.

Responses came from just 1,204 New Yorkers (out of roughly 8 million) reached online, by text, or by live phone interview. Voters grappling with low purchasing power, declining living standards, and political extremism had little enthusiasm for Hochul’s leadership.

According to the poll, 53% believe the governor is not a good leader, and 57% oppose her bid for re-election in 2026. The survey also broke down some demographics in terms of approval and disapproval of the governor’s performance among major cohorts:

A slim majority—51%—favor Hochul working with President Donald Trump, while 48%, including 70% of Democrats, urge the governor to oppose him…
