This Memorial Day, you might see more faces of local service men and women in the U.S. Military are gracing the streets and parks throughout Syracuse. They’re part of a program called Hometown Heroes, which began along James Street and in Kirk Park. The popular banners are expanding to five new locations honoring veterans, both past and present.
Mayor Ben Walsh said they started it last Memorial Day weekend intending to leave the banners up for a three year run, but he said the demand for more flags has grown as families reach out to share their veterans’ stories.
“I’m proud of the many things that we’ve done, but in some ways this is as significant, if not more than any others, because it’s an opportunity to very publicly celebrate our veterans, both past and present,” Walsh said…
