Expert calls fencing near Syracuse Rescue Mission ‘hostile architecture’

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Jesse Rabinowitz works at the National Homelessness Law Center, a nonprofit that he said Uses law, policy and narrative change to fight for the rights of the people who are homeless. He also said it seeks to build a world where everyone has the housing and support to thrive.

He told the I-Team the new chain link fencing on Dickerson Street in downtown Syracuse is an example of “hostile architecture.” Which is a term used to describe elements in city that make it harder for the homeless to navigate or live.

Rabinowitz described the Dickerson Street fence as, “Using design elements, whether it’s a bar across a bench, or fencing or spikes, or even loud music to displace homeless people from places where they might otherwise be. It doesn’t solve homelessness, it makes homelessness worse.”…
