Syracuse to receive more than $1.7 million to restore southside grocery store

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Economic Development Corporation is set to receive $1,719,000 from New York State to help expand food access.

The money will be used to partner with the City of Syracuse, Ellicott Development Company, Super Imperial Market and Food Access Healthy Neighborhoods Now to renovate and reopen the Valley Plaza Grocery. The business, which sits on the city’s southside, has been vacant since 2018.

According to the Office of Governor Kathy Hochul, the project will result in 22,000 square feet of retail food space. It will help bring fresh produce, meats and prepared foods to the area as well as grocery delivery for seniors…
