Full list as severe heat state of emergency declared in 32 New York counties after children die

A state of emergency has been declared for 32 New York counties after fatal storms lashed the region before a brutal heatwave is set to send temperatures soaring to triple digits.

Three people, including two children, died in Central New York on Sunday as the region was battered by thunderstorms, powerful winds and heavy rain that toppled trees, damaged homes and prompted a rare flash flood emergency. Shelly Johnson, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene after a tree fell on her home in Kirkland in Oneida County.

Emergency responders were called out to another home in the same town that a tree had also fallen on. “It was reported by the caller that the roof collapsed onto her, causing her to become temporarily entrapped and she was unable to locate her two daughters,” officials said.

The daughters, Emily Bisson and Kenni Bisson, both 6 years old, were found inside the home and died at the scene. Following the deadly storms, an extreme heat warning has been issued for New York City and the Tri-State area as residents are being urged to prepare for dangerously hot conditions.
