SYRACUSE, N.Y. — While many people enjoy the comfort of air conditioning, animals at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo are enduring the heat with some help.
Zookeepers said many of the zoo’s animals, including elephants, hogsand monkeys, are naturally adapted to hot temperatures. They are also constantly monitored for signs of overheating, said the zookeepers.
“Anything above 80 degrees: We do all we can to keep our animals cool at the zoo, so, a lot of times you’ll see a lot of the animals have access to their indoor barns,” described Hoof Stock Collections Manager Alana Auwae. “Sometimes we give them ice treats. We like to keep everything different for them every day, so we don’t always give them an ice treat above 80, but that’s typically when we’d be more likely to.”…
